Women's golf in Scotland has a fascinating history. The story begins in the 18th century in Musselburgh with evidence of the herring girls playing golf for lobster creel prizes and silk handkerchiefs. From 1863 the game became more popular with the Victorian ladies of St Andrews, playing the game under the watchful eye of the patriarchs who controlled the playing fields and how they were used.
