However, in 2021, Zhang faced significant controversy when old photos surfaced of him visiting locations in Japan, including the Yasukuni Shrine and Nogi Shrine, which are associated with Japan's wartime history. This led to accusations of insensitivity and unpatriotic behavior, resulting in the termination of his partnerships with major brands and the removal of his works from Chinese platforms.
