After appearing in a feature film in Germany, "Es leuchten die Sterne" (1938), Vera Bergman left Berlin for Rome, Italy. In 1939 she auditioned for Vittorio De Sica, and despite her young age she was chosen for the part of L'insegnate Elisa Malgari in the film "Maddalena... zero in condotta" (1940).
