As a teenager, he admired the exploits of the great contemporary mountaineers (Bonatti, Messner...) and practiced climbing on the cliffs of Vercors and Ardèche. From that time on, he integrated full soloing into his climbing practice, identical to the progressions undertaken in mountaineering.
